Sonic Signatures is an interdisciplinary collaborationof scholars and music-makers who come together to explore how musicmakes cities. More specifically, they argue that the musicalencounter, composed of an array of production and consumptionpractices, takes on particular and essential meaning at night.Thinking about music as an encounter allows one to appreciate thevalue and power of migration within the act of music-making.

The majority of voices amplified in the book come from so-called"migrants," understood as someone who was born in one country andcurrently lives and works in another. Yet, these words, migration,migrant and migrancy, are more expansive than that as they indicatea range of movement, politics and place-making.

Designing for sustainability is all about the future. As a discipline, design is rightly concerned with bringing about positive change for the long-term flourishing of the planet. From atomic bomb fallouts to shampoo microplastics, the Earth's environmental woes are indelibly linked to modern societies overconsumption of resources and the mass-waste that this creates, particularly Global North countries across Europe and North America. In an effort to curb their impacts, many of these country's governments signed the Paris Agreement in 2015 with the collective goal of keeping global temperature increases to a maximum of 1.5 °C, as well as pledging to meet ambitious Net-Zero carbon emission reduction targets by the year 2050. Despite this growing consensus, how we collectively go about instigating the vital societal, economic, and technological transformations needed to move beyond the current Anthropocene remains a contentious issue. Resultantly, the dialogues that surround sustainability - both broadly and within the field of design - can often deviate into two opposing silos: one which frames 'the future' as a sustainable utopia and the other an unsustainable dystopia. Given their long-standing power and influence in shaping the modern world, technologies sit at the heart of this dichotomy.

"Has Scotland suffered from colonial oppression by England for the last 300 years? While historiography may give an answer in the negative, this study reveals that the contemporary Scottish novel is haunted by strong feelings, marked by perceptions of abjection and inferiorisation in response to constructing the English as dominating. Drawing from an unprecedented corpus of contemporary Scottish novels, this study explores the postcolonial in Scottish fiction in order to investigate the underlying discursive power relations that shape the Scottish literary imagination. The study consequently demonstrates that the analysis of Scottish national identity profits from this new angle of interpretation of the Scottish novel as postcolonial. The analysis of discourses such as those of gender, class, space and place, and race reveals how the construction of the Scottish as marginalised permeates the width of the contemporary Scottish novel, by referring to diverse examples, such as James Kelman's How late it was, how late or genre fiction such as Ian Rankin's Set in Darkness. Thus, this study provides an insightful reading in the wake of current political developments such as the Scottish independence referendum."
